ARTIST STATEMENT:
Walking along the beaches of Cape Cod, the wind picks up and the waves start to grow larger and larger as they crash on the rocks. Heavy clouds move in and the sky and water darken to deep blue and grey. I paint to capture that exciting energy- the air mixing with wind and water. I work partially to perfect technique then destroy it to bring forth the energy and bring my paintings to life. I use oil paint because of the elasticity of the medium which allows me to rearrange forms like the natural energy in storms. My style is Abstract Expressionist, I love to take a form or idea, destroy it and bring it back to life as an expression in a painting.
I had a kidney transplant and have used painting as a healing medium. I get lost in the act of painting and have used it to forget about medications, problems and physical issues. In the past 5 years, I decided that painting would again be an important part of my life. After setting my painting aside temporarily while raising my children I have returned to working with a strong dedication and openness to new inspiration. In my work " Contentment" I give thanks to my daughter for my new kidney and my sons for all of their love and encouragement. I have put a kidney shape at the center of the figure to represent the changes in my life and the importance of my kidney ,to live and love , and I find contentment. I recently painted an abstract kidney entitled "Kidney Tree of Life"- again a testament to the life given back to me
I still find inspiration on walks by the ocean and the "gifts from the sea" that I find. I follow the wise advice of a former instructor and I "see". I see the cormorants drying their wings in cold fall breezes. I see pieces of driftwood, an old rusted bike dripping with sea algae- a remnant of Hurricane Sandy and the lives lost and inspiration found. I see an old lobster trap twisted and broken and wonder- how can I use this ? I used pieces of driftwood in some of my abstract works and have made a large piece of found wood into a sculpture inspired by zen rock sculptures. I have also used the things around me. I used prescription bottles from the many medications required after transplant surgery. The packing paper from dishes replaced- they mix with paint on canvas and become art . The wind and waves at the beach call to me, they pull me in, over and under and spit me out and become new artworks and will continue to do so. I moved to Buffalo, NY and continue to find inspiration daily from the both the things around me found walking through the park and the great people I meet, the musical performances I attend and
life as it changes me.
